What is partner attribution?

In one sentence

Partner attribution is recording which partner contributed to a deal and how much, so partner-sourced and partner-influenced revenue can be reported alongside everything else rather than estimated at the end of the quarter.

Also called: channel attribution, partner-sourced revenue, partner influence.

It is the number every partner program is judged on and the number most programs cannot produce. The reason is structural: the CRM has one field for how a deal arrived, the partner's involvement often happened before that field was set, and nothing writes it back afterwards.

Attribution is normally split in two. Partner-sourced means the partner brought the opportunity and it would not exist otherwise. Partner-influenced means the deal was already live and the partner materially helped it close. Conflating them overstates the program, and reporting only sourced revenue understates it, usually badly.

Why is partner attribution so difficult?

Because the evidence is spread across systems that do not talk to each other. The introduction is in someone's inbox, the registration is in a portal, the opportunity is in the CRM, and the commission is in a spreadsheet. Each holds part of the record and none holds the whole one.

The second difficulty is timing. Partner influence frequently happens before the account is a lead, so there is no record to attach it to yet. By the time the opportunity exists, the origin has to be reconstructed from memory.

How should partner influence be measured?

By recording the contribution when it happens rather than deciding at close. A registered deal, a logged co-sell activity, a partner-submitted lead: each is a timestamped claim that can be checked against the opportunity later. Attribution then becomes a query rather than a negotiation.

Whatever the model, it needs to be the same one finance uses to pay commission. Two versions of the number is how programs end up arguing about their own performance.

How Airstride does it

Airstride writes attribution into the CRM record as the activity happens, so partner-sourced pipeline appears in the same reports the rest of the business already reads.
